We in Ógra Shinn Féin condemn the decision of the Spanish Supreme Court to reopen the case of five Basque political leaders, including the Secretary General of EH Bildu, Arnaldo Otegi.
In 2011, the five were sentenced to ten years in prison, later reduced to six years. In 2018, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that article 6.1 of the European Convention on Human Rights on the 'right to a fair trial' had been violated. The Spanish effort to re-run the trial is a gross violation of the human rights of the five political leaders. As was seen in the Altsasu case a few years ago, Spain continues to criminalise Basque activists without hesitation. The Spanish Government should engage constructively with the Basque political leadership on issues such as political prisoners and self-determination.
