New Caledonia Narrowly Reject Independence from France
The South Pacific islands of Kanaky (New Caledonia) have narrowly rejected independence in a referendum this weekend. These results will come as a blow for the indigenous Kanak people who have campaigned so bravely for independence over the years. However the narrowness of the result offers optimism for the future, as another vote will be held in 2022. Furthermore the margin of defeat this weekend was much narrower than that of the 2018 referendum.
We trust that the Kanak people will continue to struggle for their independence, and will be ready for the battle again in 2022.
Colonialism by western powers is simply incompatible with Republican and Socialist principles. Decolonisation must continue globally, not just in political terms but also economically, linguistically, culturally and socially.
In the words of Thomas Sankara; “When the people stand up, Imperialism trembles”.
