Statement on the Protection of Historical Site
The former home of the O’Rahilly is facing immediate demolition in Dublin. Michael O’Rahilly died just off Moore Street in 1916 after he led a group of volunteers out of the GPO. His house is being targeted by developers in order to build apartments and an hotel. They see our national history getting in the way of their profit making.
This house was used to plan the Howth gun running in 1914, it was used by Markievicz to set up a branch of Cumman Na mBan, it is where he planned his part in 1916 and even after his death the IRA used it to plan the attack on the customs house. The establishment and their allied capitalist class have always tried to bury our history for two reasons. The first being to line their pockets and the second being they fear the ideals our patriots stood for. The Ireland the O’Rahilly stood for was an Ireland of equals, not an Ireland for the developers or bankers, an Ireland of the people is what he stood for. In 1916 the men and women made a stand in the name of the republic. We must make a stand to keep a monument of our revolutionary history. We must make a stand against the gombeens in defense of the past but also in hope that one day our republic will be a reality.
Ógra Sinn Féin is calling for the planned destruction of this historical site to be halted immediately.
