The people of Ireland have put right this historical wrong

Ógra Shinn Féin welcome the results of yesterday’s referendum where 66.4% of people voted in favour of women’s healthcare.

A spokesperson for Ógra Shinn Féin said:

“In 1983 the people of Ireland inserted an amendment into our constitution with the purpose of saving lives, unfortunately it did quite the opposite and instead put Mná na hÉireann in danger.

“The people of Ireland have put right this historical wrong. Citizens in the 6 counties couldn’t have their say on something which will inevitably also effect them, as a result of another historical wrong #PartitionSucks.

“This is an historic result for women and a significant step forward for Ireland. We now see a bright, vibrant Ireland stepping out of the darkness of the past.

“We campaigned vigorously on the the repeal of the 8th amendment, we now must ensure that proper legislation that protects women’s health and shows compassion.

“We must also work to ensure that the denial of rights to citizens in the north is ended, this sits alongside Acht Gaeilge, Marriage Equality and the other outstanding rights issues that have yet to be implemented. This needs to change.”
