Statement on North Frederick Street eviction

 Ógra Shinn Féin condemns the heavy handed eviction of peaceful housing activists from 34 North Fredrick Street yesterday evening (Tuesday October 11th).

A spokesperson said: 

“The use of force exerted force by masked agents of the landlord, under the watchful eye of the Gardaí is a truly terrifying and concerning indictment of the power of the landlord class in this country.

“Housing activists under the campaign group “Take Back the City” have been occupying empty homes in Dublin’s city centre, exposing the reality of this housing and homelessness crisis; there are homes enough for everyone.

“Activists have taken to occupying a number of properties, starting in Summerhill Parade, North Frederick Street and then in Belvedere Place.

“Ógra Shinn Féin supports the the call for Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy to resign from his position.

“Questions need to be answered about the actions of the Garda used to protect and escort masked thugs as they carried out their violent eviction, arresting six and leaving four with injuries requiring hospital treatment.

“It is important that it is clarified whether the security firm who the gardai were facilitating had the appropriate documentation of identification, and under what legal basis they were there.

 “This though is not the end and only the beginning. We continue to support the Take Back the City Campaign however they can. Housing is a human right.”
