Republican Youth backs boycott of Trump
Sinn Féin Republican Youth has echoed international calls for political leaders to Boycott US President Donald Trump following the recent racist US travel ban.
In a statement today, Chairperson Fintan Warfield said:
“Following the policy positions adopted by delegates at last weekend’s National Youth Congress, Republican Youth actively opposes fascism and racism in all of its forms.
“We view the regressive immigration policies implemented by US President Donald Trump to be racist and unacceptable.
“We stand in solidarity with American people who have taken to the streets across the United States to protest against the targeting of immigrants and discrimination against Muslims.
“Republican Youth acknowledges the enormous contribution of the US to the Irish Peace Process.
“We equally acknowledge the reciprocal and positive relationship that we enjoy with Americans.
“However, we believe all progressive political forces should oppose the racist and discriminatory policies of the Trump administration and that Irish political leaders should not facilitate or normalise the Trump Presidency.
“We do not accept that any boycott of President Trump and his reactionary policies undermines the longstanding and positive relationships between the people of Ireland and the people of the United States.
“We therefore support the call for Taoiseach Enda Kenny to cancel his planned St Patrick’s Day visit to Washington, and expect all political leaders in Ireland to do the same, should we fail to see a radical U-turn in the policies of this administration.
